Why Travel to the Maldives?

The Maldives is not just another postcard-perfect beach destination. Though one of the smallest countries in the world, this small nation in the heart of the Indian Ocean is filled with memorable experiences. The Maldives is the home of 26 reefs that measure a total length of 800 km, with almost 1,200 islands. However, around 200 of these islands are inhabited and the other 200 are the islands which have resorts. As you land at Velana International Airport in the capital city Malé, you are now in a place known for its magnificent natural beauty among which are pristine beaches, colorful coral reefs, and countless marine species.

The Perfect Beach Experience

When you think of the Maldives, you must see the bea

utiful crystal clear waters and sandy beaches, which is no wonder, as the Maldives are famous for their white sandy beaches, which are not only beautiful in pictures, but breathtaking in person.

Just remember, shells, corals, and other treasures are best left where you find them. The Maldives has a fragile ecosystem, and removing even the tiniest fragment can impact the local wildlife. For instance, hermit crabs use these shells to build their homes, and in doing so, they help control the sand fly population. So, while it might be tempting to take a piece of the Maldives with you, if everyone did this, who knows what changes might occur in this previously unspoilt paradise?

A Diver’s Paradise

If you’re into snorkeling or scuba diving, the Maldives is a destination you absolutely cannot miss. The coral reefs surrounding these islands are teeming with life—think colorful tropical fish, majestic stingrays, and even the friendly whale shark. With more than 1,000 species of fish and 40 species of sharks, the underwater world here is nothing short of magical.

A Unique Cultural Experience

The Maldives is not just about its natural beauty; the local culture adds a lot to the experience. The Maldivian people are renowned for their hospitality, and if you visit the local islands, you can get a taste of their traditional way of life. Whether it’s sampling freshly caught seafood or watching traditional Maldivian dances, the cultural experience here is truly special.

Tip: When you’re on a local island, it’s important to respect the local customs. This is especially true when it comes to religious and cultural rules, like modest dress. You should wear appropriate clothing in restaurants and public places, and remember that alcohol is not allowed on the local islands.

When to Go to the Maldives?

The Maldives is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is the period that aligns with your plan. The dry season which runs from November to April is the best time for beachgoers particularly the ones interested in snorkelling and diving. The summertime is characterized by warm and sunny weather with no rainfall at all, so it is perfectly suited for the beach.

Nonetheless, if you are planning a more cost-effective trip, you should consider traveling in the off-season, from May to October. This is the rainy season, which means more rain and stronger winds. Do not let this discourage you; rain showers are usually short and the islands have plenty of sunshine anyway. Plus, the low season brings about tour prices to fall and relax tourists away, allowing you some quiet time.

Special Events and Marine Life

For those interested in marine life, certain times of the year offer unique opportunities. The plankton blooms in June and July attract stingrays and whale sharks, so if seeing these incredible creatures is on your bucket list, plan your trip during these months!

Tip: If you really want to witness the giants of the ocean, don’t hesitate to book special tours in advance for a greater chance of spotting them. These tours usually come with snorkeling gear, so you won’t need to buy or rent additional equipment.

Useful Travel Tips: What You Need to Know Before You Go

Passport Requirements

Traveling to the Maldives without a passport is one of the most frequently asked questions. The answer is no—a valid passport is required to enter the country. Most nationalities are entitled to a free 30-day visa upon arrival, but it’s advisable to check the latest entry requirements before you depart.

Tip: Besides your passport, it’s a good idea to make a copy and keep it somewhere else, such as online or in a separate location, just in case the original gets lost.

How to Get to the Maldives

The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. The main gateway is Velana International Airport in Malé. From there, you can reach your accommodation by speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight. The best mode of transport will depend on where your accommodation is located. If you’re staying on an island close to Malé, a speedboat is the most convenient option. For more remote islands, a scenic seaplane ride is the way to go.

Currency and Payment Options

The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US dollars are widely accepted, especially on the resort islands. Debit and credit cards are also commonly used, so there’s no need to carry a lot of cash. Still, it’s a good idea to have some local currency on hand for smaller purchases, particularly if you’re visiting local islands.

Tip: Currency is often returned in a mix of rufiyaa and dollars, so keep an eye on it to avoid any confusion.

Cultural Rules

When visiting local islands, be sure to respect the local customs and dress modestly, especially outside of the designated tourist beaches. Remember, the Maldives is a Muslim country, so alcohol consumption is prohibited on the local islands, and swimwear is only allowed on the designated ‘bikini beaches.’

Our Unforgettable Experience in the Maldives

We spent a week in the Maldives during the tail end of the high season. We debated for a long time whether to stay on a residential island or a resort island, but after a lot of research and weighing up the costs, we decided on a residential island. We read countless reviews and trip reports and realized that no matter where we stayed, we could easily visit other islands at a reasonable price. So, where we stayed wasn’t the deciding factor.

Maafushi

We chose to stay on Maafushi, a popular island close to the capital and the airport, which was an important factor for us. This island is inhabited by locals, so we had to be mindful of the religious and cultural customs. Thankfully, everyone spoke English, and signs were in English as well, which made it much easier to navigate.

Since the Maldives is an Islamic country, bathing in swimsuits is prohibited on the inhabited islands. Women should cover up any revealing clothing with a loose sarong or beach towel. Alcohol consumption is prohibited across the country, and monokini or nudism is not allowed, though resort islands are an exception.

You can find pork on resort islands, but not on inhabited ones. The restaurants offer a variety of continental cuisine, and the food is quite tasty. Locals mostly eat tuna and chicken. Prices are fairly standard compared to international standards—a main course starts at around $8, a half-liter bottle of water is about $1, and cocktails range from $5 to $8. While tipping is not expected, a service charge is usually included.

Our luggage was taken from the port to our accommodation, and tipping for this service is customary. The island has everything the locals need, such as food, household items, electronics, clothing, and souvenirs. However, it’s important to note that fresh food for cooking isn’t available, so self-catering isn’t an option. Instead, you’ll find snacks, soft drinks, toiletries, milk, coffee, and mineral water. Payment can be made in US dollars or Maldivian Rufiyaa. Prices are often displayed in both currencies, and change is given in a mix, so keep an eye on your money.

Maafushi is a bustling island, but the activity adds to its lively atmosphere rather than being a distraction. The locals are friendly and helpful. There are no paved roads, and the streets are laid out in a grid pattern. Cars are rare, with most people using motorbikes, but the traffic isn’t dangerous. The island has left-hand traffic, but this is more for show than anything else. Swimsuits are only allowed on the designated “bikini beach,” but that’s fine because the bikini beach is the most beautiful part of the island.

We walked around the island, which is quite small, and discovered that the southern part is home to a large prison. There are a few small hostels nearby, but the area isn’t particularly attractive. At night, this part of the island feels a bit deserted, and there’s also a large garbage incinerator. The locals love football, with two football fields and two mosques on the island.

The northern part of the island is quieter and more welcoming, with most of the tour operators located there. The prices for tours are generally similar, and the activities offered are mostly the same. We participated in a few tours and were very satisfied with our experience. Prices for half-day tours start at $20-$30, while full-day tours range from $50-$80. The most expensive tours are the resort island visits, which cost between $95-$200. These prices usually include transportation, lunch, and unlimited drinks, including alcohol.

Days on the island are fairly short, with the sun rising around 7:30 AM and setting by 6:20 PM. Nighttime temperatures don’t differ much from daytime, and the humidity is very high, so it’s warm all the time. Daytime temperatures hover around 30-32 degrees Celsius, but it feels closer to 40 degrees. The sea temperature averages around 30 degrees Celsius, so it’s always comfortably warm.

We used sunscreen regularly but still managed to get a bit sunburned, even without sunbathing. The sun is very strong, so it’s easy to burn in just a few minutes. We didn’t see many people sunbathing, either.

Whale Shark and Manta Ray Experience

One of the highlights of our trip was the chance to see whale sharks and manta rays. We had to travel quite far to find the whale sharks and spent hours searching, but when we finally spotted them, we jumped into the water and swam close to them. These animals are friendly but usually swim deep, surfacing only occasionally. Our encounter with the manta rays was just as memorable. These giant creatures are truly awe-inspiring, even though they swim at greater depths.

Resort Islands

Although we stayed on a residential island, we also visited a resort island, where the peace and tranquility were indescribable. Resort islands tend to be smaller, and while there are many tourists, they’re spread out, so it doesn’t feel crowded. There are no restrictions on food and drink, and all the luxuries you could want are available. While the resort islands offer a wide range of spa treatments and water sports, we enjoyed interacting with the locals, who were vibrant and easygoing.

Overall, the Maldives is truly paradise on earth. What you see on postcards is exactly what you’ll find in reality. This is a place where people of all ages can enjoy unforgettable experiences. If there’s one place you should visit in your lifetime, it’s the Maldives!
